Choosing a size - What size art goes where?

Choosing a size - What size art goes where?

One of the most common questions I am asked is "What size should I choose?".

Now, it really depends on if you have a particular space you are looking to fill in your home, office, or business, or if you plan to hang your painting in multiple spaces (maybe you are planning to relocate homes).

If you have a particular wall space, the best place to start is to grab:

- a measuring tape - a must have!
- some low-tack painters tape (hardware store) or some sheets of scrap paper to mark out a size with.

First, you are going to want to measure your total wall width and height. Next, is there any furniture against the wall or nearby (think, couch, bed, dining table, buffets etc). If so, measure your furniture width and height too.

Next step, grab that painters tape or paper and mark out the size you had in mind on the wall. Obviously this is a removable, temporary way to sketch out a size in real life. This is the best way(in my opinion!) as it allows you to take a step back, and live with the size for a while.

Take note of if it is too big, too small, the wrong shape (square, panoramic, rectangle etc). Sometimes what you think you needed or wanted, is too small or too big and it is better to work that out in advance, before you hang the artwork!
